Symmetricom Purchases Advanced Video Technologies from Genista: Extends Symmetricom's End-to-End Quality of Experience (QoE) Monitoring Solutio
SAN JOSE, Calif. (BusinessWire EON) June 14, 2007 --
"In order for service providers to ensure the delivery of high quality content and optimum service levels to their customers, and thus to protect their substantial investments in next generation networks, they must monitor service quality on a real time basis," commented David R. Cox, executive vice president and general manager of Symmetricom's QoE Assurance Division. "Their ability to quickly and accurately diagnose problems as they arise, and hence to prevent future service issues, will also be critical for CSPs to control rising customer support costs. The addition of Genista's technology to our existing QoE solutions will enable providers of advanced video services to monitor streams of both compressed and uncompressed video at various network nodes in order to capture true perceptual quality as experienced by end users."
Ensuring a high quality experience for consumers of next generation triple/quad play services requires the assurance of both content integrity and the performance of high bandwidth, IP-based networks.
"Genista's software complements Symmetricom's award-winning V-Factor(R) product technology, the only commercially deployed QoE solution that combines both content impairments and real time network performance into a single MOS (mean opinion score) metric in order to monitor end users' QoE," added Yves Cognet, chief technology officer for Symmetricom's QoE Assurance Division.
Dr. Stefan Winkler, who was chief scientist and a co-founder of Genista, will become the chief scientist of Symmetricom's QoE Assurance Division. Dr. Winkler has been a professor at the National University of Singapore and the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. A world-renowned expert on perceptual video quality measurement, he has published more than 40 papers in this area and is the author of the book "Digital Video Quality: Vision Models and Metrics". Dr. Winkler has been a key contributor to the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG) since receiving his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), where his thesis was entitled "Vision models and quality metrics for image processing applications". While at EPFL, Dr. Winkler was a key contributor to the development of the MPQM model of video analysis, upon which Symmetricom's V-Factor(R) is also based. In addition to co-founding Genista, he has held various positions at Siemens, Hewlett-Packard and Andersen Consulting.
"Determining perceived image quality is critical for evaluating the impact of impairments that arise during the delivery of real time video services over unpredictable, IP-based networks," said Dr. Winkler. "Given the fact that 'not all packets are created equal' in an IP-based world, Genista's unique technologies provide essential tools to ensure that the perceived quality of video services meets the increasingly high expectations of today's consumers. In combination with the solutions already offered by Symmetricom to the world's leading CSPs, we will now be able to offer an end-to-end, highly robust solution that will enable both next generation service providers as well as content providers to monitor service quality."
This technology purchase builds upon prior activity by Symmetricom in the QoE assurance marketplace. In January 2007, Symmetricom announced the acquisition of QoSmetrics S.A., now integrated into Symmetricom's QoE Assurance Division, which provides QoE solutions for monitoring the performance of triple and quad play services. V-Factor(R)-based products are elemental to the various QoE solutions offered by Symmetricom, and are consistent with the company's commitment to provide its customers with foundational technologies that enable the reliable, secure delivery of advanced communication services.
