ComVu Speeds Ahead with First Live Video Streaming From WiMAX Enabled Devices

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) January 9, 2008 -- ComVu Media, Inc., the leading provider of live video streaming right from your phone, today announced a significant expansion of its platform by enabling comprehensive support of WiMAX enabled mobile devices. PocketCaster software is now optimized in a new 'Pro' version for devices with built-in WiMAX networking, such as the Ultra Mobile PCs, and the Linux-based Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), and Internet Tablets.

PocketCaster Pro can deliver a significant increase in video quality on Mobile Internet Devices based on Intel Corporation's upcoming low power platform, codenamed "Menlow". The mobile Internet capability delivered by WiMAX technology also allows PocketCaster Pro to exploit its grand-prize winning innovations in location-based services (LBS) by integrating frame accurate GPS coordinates in the video stream. This technology allows a broadcaster's location to be tracked in real-time on an online map.

"The convergence of WiMAX networks and powerful mobile devices with onboard GPS create the perfect storm for leveraging an expanded PocketCaster Pro platform," said William Mutual, ComVu CEO. "We predict that providing a one-button simple way to broadcast high quality video from a mobile device will change the way people create and deliver user-generated video on-the-go."

CES attendees visiting Intel Booth #7153 will be able to see first hand the PocketCaster Pro application streaming live video over WiMAX to a Web 2.0 portal. Video streams with embedded GPS location data will be broadcasting live from several WiMAX enabled devices moving around Las Vegas. Designed as an interactive mashup, the portal will show each broadcaster's location as a colored pinpoint on a map, and then when clicked will launch the corresponding live video stream.

How it works

Once PocketCaster Pro is installed on a device, users simply press the "start" button and the device will begin streaming a video. At the same time, the application will establish a data connection and stream the video live with embedded GPS data from the device to a server using WiMAX. From there, the video can be propagated to a webpage where friends, relatives and fans can watch what's being shot and see the location, in real time.

Because the video is automatically stored on a server, a copy of the video is instantly available when the "stop" button is pressed, and can also be displayed on a global map for convenient browsing. Defaults can be defined in advance, so that alerts are sent to friends when a user goes "live". Every member is provided a personal webpage to host videos and show locations on a map.

How it can be used

PocketCaster Pro can be used to share a birthday party, wedding, or sporting event with people who aren't able to attend. A student can broadcast a lecture to a roommate back at the dorm. A technician might show distant colleagues a broken part or piece of machinery. A journalist (professional or citizen) can share a breaking news event, and have a record for later. Security officers and first responders in the field can provide a clear view of what's happening to decision-makers back at the office.

Availability

PocketCaster Pro is available now through a beta program and can be accessed by signing up at the Company's website. The Web 2.0 mashup features showcased in the demonstration provide a preview of what will be included in the beta of the PocketCaster portal, which is targeted for launch in February 2008.
